When a Facebook link shows an old title, the wrong image, or no preview, fix the information on the webpage first. Then use Facebook’s Sharing Debugger to ask Facebook to fetch the page again. The debugger shows what Facebook received and updates Facebook’s saved copy. It cannot fix missing or outdated information on your site.
A link preview is the title, description, and image Facebook displays beside a URL. Websites provide these details through metadata: information in the page’s HTML that describes its content. Open Graph is a common format for that metadata. For WordPress publishers who also want to share posts automatically, PressQueue can send posts through Buffer and set the image used in link previews.
Fix the page, then request a new scrape
Start by correcting the page’s sharing title, description, and image in your site’s settings or SEO plugin. Publish the changes. If your site uses a caching plugin, server cache, or content delivery network (CDN), clear the relevant cache so Facebook receives the updated page.
Next, enter the public page URL in Facebook’s Sharing Debugger and select Debug. Review the preview and the scrape time, which tells you when Facebook last fetched the page. If Facebook has already fetched the URL, select Scrape Again to request updated information. The Showit instructions describe this refresh sequence.
Check the tags Facebook received if the preview still looks wrong. The Open Graph protocol defines core page details such as og:title, og:type, og:url, and og:image. The og:image value must be the image file’s URL. A page that displays the image has a different URL. If Facebook’s raw tags show old information, investigate publishing and site caches or conflicting metadata. Yoast’s troubleshooting steps recommend inspecting the raw tags when a refreshed preview remains incorrect.
Check the image and warning details
For a large Facebook preview, use an image around 1200 × 630 pixels. WordPress.com and Wix also document a minimum of 200 × 200 pixels, though that minimum is not a good target for a prominent preview. Keep important text or subjects away from the edges, where cropping can occur. See Facebook image guidance.
Warnings can appear even when the preview works. For example, ordinary shared content can display properly despite a missing fb:app_id warning, according to Yoast. Focus first on whether Facebook can fetch the page and whether the title and image are correct.
If the debugger shows the right preview but an old Facebook post still displays the wrong one, test a newly composed share. Refreshing the page’s preview does not guarantee that Facebook will update a post already published. Squarespace’s troubleshooting guidance also recommends reposting when an existing post remains incorrect.
Set up link images with PressQueue
PressQueue is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that shares posts to social networks through Buffer. For Facebook link previews, PressQueue can use its generated social image as the page’s og:image and twitter:image. It works with Yoast SEO, Rank Math, The SEO Framework, and Jetpack; without an SEO plugin, it adds the tags itself. An image set for an individual post in the SEO plugin takes precedence.
To get started, download pressqueue.zip from the PressQueue download page, then go to Plugins > Add Plugin > Upload Plugin in WordPress. Connect it by pasting a personal Buffer API key, a code from your Buffer settings. There is no login button.
To configure link images, open Settings > Social images in PressQueue, choose a style, and review the live preview. Then choose whether every post gets the social image. The other settings apply it only to posts without their own image or to no posts. PressQueue creates an image the first time a post needs one and makes a new image when the title or style changes. The image requires PHP GD with FreeType; without it, posts go out with text and a link.
PressQueue starts in test mode and records what it would share without sending anything. Test your sharing rule against recent posts before switching it on. See the PressQueue documentation for setup details. PressQueue needs a Buffer account with your social accounts added.
