How to auto post from WordPress to social media

Updated · 4 min read

PressQueue is a free WordPress plugin that shares your posts through Buffer. See how it works

Auto-posting sends a WordPress post to selected social accounts when it is published, or places it in a schedule to go out later. That saves you from copying the post’s link and message into each social platform. PressQueue is a free, open source WordPress plugin for Buffer, a social publishing service with a queue: a list of posts waiting for their scheduled times.

Through Buffer, PressQueue supports six platforms: LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and Facebook. You need a WordPress site that allows plugin uploads, plus WordPress 6.8 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer. You’ll also need a Buffer account with your social accounts connected. Set up PressQueue, test your sharing rules, and choose what each post sends.

Set up PressQueue and connect Buffer

Download pressqueue.zip from the PressQueue download page. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add Plugin > Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP, and activate the plugin.

Under PressQueue > Channels, paste a personal Buffer API key. PressQueue uses the API key as a credential to communicate with your Buffer account and stores it encrypted. There is no Buffer login button. Once connected, your Buffer channels appear with on and off switches. New channels start off, so turn on only the accounts you want to use. See the PressQueue documentation for setup details.

Choose when WordPress posts are shared

PressQueue uses rules to decide what to share and where. A rule can share a post when you publish it, when you make a real content change, or when you choose an older post to share. You can limit a rule by post type, category, tag, author, or custom field. Another option is a taxonomy, a way WordPress groups posts. Then choose the channels and message, and set the timing and image.

With one click, you can create a rule that shares every new post to all your channels. New rules start switched off. Test a rule against recent posts before switching it on, and use PressQueue’s Test mode first: it records what it would share without sending anything. PressQueue also offers Live and Paused modes.

For a first test, start with a specific category and one social channel. Confirm the message and image before enabling a broader rule. PressQueue shares scheduled posts when they go live. Editing a post triggers sharing only when its content has changed. Backdated posts are not shared automatically.

Customize messages, timing, and images

Messages can use placeholders such as {{ title }}, {{ excerpt }}, and {{ terms:category }}. PressQueue adds the post link for you. You can write different messages for different networks, start from a saved template, and check a live preview with a character count.

Choose whether a post goes to the end of the Buffer queue, the top of the queue ahead of posts already waiting, or out right away. You can also create a Buffer draft for review or set a date and time for one post. A practical starting point is to send a draft while you check how the message appears on each channel.

For images, choose no image, the post’s featured image, or an image selected in the post. You can also choose a social image. PressQueue’s social image puts the post title over a background with the site name underneath, in the wide format used for link previews. Set its style under Settings > Social images. PressQueue creates the image when a post first needs it. It redraws the image when the title or style changes and does not add it to the Media Library. The feature needs PHP GD with FreeType; without it, the post goes out with text and a link.

The social image can also supply the page’s Open Graph and Twitter image tags, which tell social platforms what picture to show when someone shares a link. PressQueue works with Yoast SEO and Rank Math. It also works with The SEO Framework and Jetpack. An image set for an individual post in an SEO plugin takes priority. You can use PressQueue’s image on every post, only posts without their own image, or turn the feature off.

Keep control of what gets shared

Use a Never share rule to exclude a category, tag, or author. These rules take priority over sharing rules. Each post also has a Share this post switch and a Customize for this post option in the editor. Share now sends a published post that has never been shared, after showing what each channel will receive.

To reshare previously published posts, use Share old posts. PressQueue can spread them across the Buffer queue or send them one at a time. It can also create Buffer drafts. It prevents duplicate posts when WordPress sends the same event more than once, and it does not automatically retry a share when Buffer’s response is unclear.

PressQueue is free and open source. Buffer has a free plan. See the PressQueue site and the source code for details.
