How to share WordPress posts on Threads automatically

Updated · 4 min read

PressQueue is a free WordPress plugin that shares your posts through Buffer. See how it works

If you publish on WordPress and want new posts to appear on Threads without copying links by hand, PressQueue can share them for you. It is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that sends posts to social media through Buffer, a service that publishes or schedules social posts.

PressQueue lets you choose which WordPress posts to share and what the Threads message says. You can also set when it goes out. You need a WordPress site that lets you upload plugins and a Buffer account with your Threads account connected.

Set up PressQueue for Threads

Start by adding your Threads account to Buffer. PressQueue sends posts through Buffer, so your Threads account needs to be connected to Buffer first. Buffer has a free plan.

Then install and connect PressQueue:

  1. Download pressqueue.zip from the PressQueue download page.
  2. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add Plugin > Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP, and activate the plugin.
  3. In PressQueue, paste a personal API key from your Buffer settings. An API key is a credential that lets PressQueue connect to Buffer. PressQueue stores the key encrypted, and there is no Buffer login button.
  4. Check that your Buffer channels appear in PressQueue. Each channel has an on and off switch, and new channels start off.

PressQueue’s documentation covers the setup screens and available settings.

Create and test a sharing rule

A rule tells PressQueue what to share and when. For Threads, start with the one-click rule “Share every new post to all my channels” if you want every new post sent to each selected channel. Otherwise, create a rule to filter posts. Choose a type, category, tag, author, custom field, or taxonomy. Taxonomies classify posts, for example, with categories or tags.

Rules can run when you publish a post, when a scheduled post goes live, or when someone changes the content of a published post. You can also choose older posts separately. Posts with a past publication date are not shared automatically.

New rules start switched off. PressQueue starts in Test mode, which records what it would share without sending anything. Test the rule against recent posts, review the result, then switch the rule on and set PressQueue to Live.

Choose the Threads message, timing, and image

PressQueue adds the post link for you. Build the message with placeholders such as {{ title }}, {{ excerpt }}, or {{ terms:category }}; PressQueue replaces each placeholder with information from the post. You can customize the message for each network. You can preview it with a character count or start from a saved template.

Choose how Buffer handles the post: add it to the end of its queue (the schedule of posts waiting to be published), put it at the top of the queue ahead of posts already waiting, publish it right away, or save it as a Buffer draft for review. You can also select a date and time for an individual post.

For images, choose no image or use the post’s featured image. You can also use an image selected in the post or a PressQueue social image. PressQueue can create a share image with the post title over a background and the site name underneath. Choose the style in Settings > Social images and preview it there. PressQueue generates the image the first time a post needs it and keeps it out of the WordPress Media Library. If the title or style changes, PressQueue redraws it. Image generation requires PHP GD with FreeType. Without that feature, the post goes out with text and a link.

A social image can also be used as the post’s og:image and twitter:image. These page tags tell social platforms which image to use in a link preview. PressQueue works with search engine optimization (SEO) plugins, including Yoast SEO and Rank Math. It also works with The SEO Framework and Jetpack. Without an SEO plugin, PressQueue adds the tags itself. If a post already has an image set in its SEO plugin, that image takes priority.

Choose whether PressQueue applies social images to every post, only posts without their own image, or no posts. Then preview a shared link after publishing. The image tags make the image available for link previews, though the platform controls how a preview appears.

Manage individual posts and avoid duplicates

To share a single post, use Share now on a published post that has never been shared. PressQueue shows what each channel will receive before sending it. To reshare posts that are already published, use Share old posts and send them across the Buffer queue, one at a time, or as Buffer drafts.

The editor also includes a Share this post switch and Customize for this post controls. Set a Never share rule for a category to keep it off social media. You can also set one for a tag or an author. These rules take priority over sharing rules. PressQueue prevents repeated WordPress events from creating duplicate posts, and it does not automatically retry a share when Buffer’s reply is unclear.
