If you publish articles on WordPress and want them to appear on LinkedIn without copying and pasting each post, connect WordPress to a publishing tool. The tool sends a LinkedIn update when a post meets your sharing rules. That update typically includes a message and a link to your article, rather than republishing the full article as a LinkedIn post.
PressQueue is a free, open-source WordPress plugin that sends posts to social networks through Buffer, a service for managing social accounts and posts scheduled to publish later. You connect your LinkedIn account to Buffer, then use PressQueue to choose what to share, where, and when.
Prepare your WordPress and Buffer accounts
You need a WordPress site that lets you upload plugins. You also need WordPress 6.8 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer, plus a Buffer account with your LinkedIn profile or Company Page added. Buffer has a free plan.
PressQueue shares through Buffer, so it does not connect to LinkedIn with a login button. Instead, you provide a personal Buffer API key, a code that lets PressQueue send sharing instructions to Buffer. PressQueue stores the key encrypted.
Set up PressQueue
- Download pressqueue.zip from the PressQueue download page. In WordPress, go to Plugins > Add Plugin > Upload Plugin, upload the ZIP, and activate PressQueue.
- Open PressQueue > Channels and paste in your API key from Buffer. Select the LinkedIn channel you want to use. New channels appear switched off, so turn on only the destinations you intend to use.
- Create a sharing rule. You can set a rule for new posts with one click, or choose which post types, categories, tags, authors, custom fields, or other ways of grouping posts qualify. A rule also controls the message, image, destination channels, and timing.
- Keep the new rule switched off while you test it against recent posts. Review the results, then switch it on when they look right.
PressQueue starts in Test mode, which records what it would share without sending anything. Switch to Live when you are ready to publish, or choose Paused to stop sharing. See the PressQueue documentation for the plugin’s setup details.
Choose the LinkedIn message and timing
PressQueue adds the post link for you. In the message, placeholders such as {{ title }}, {{ excerpt }}, and {{ terms:category }} insert information from the WordPress post. You can create different messages for different networks, start from a saved template, and check a live preview with a character count.
For timing, PressQueue offers five choices. You can add the post to the end of the Buffer queue, put it at the top of the queue ahead of posts already waiting, or send it right away. You can also save it as a Buffer draft or pick a date and time for that post. WordPress shares a scheduled post when it goes live. It does not automatically share a post published with a past date.
Pick an image and check the link preview
For each post, choose no image, the featured image, an image selected in the post, or a PressQueue social image. When you select an image in a post, Buffer shares one image for that post.
A PressQueue social image shows the post title over a background, with your site name underneath. Set its style under Settings > Social images and preview the result. PressQueue creates the image when a post first needs one and redraws it if the title or style changes. The image stays out of the WordPress Media Library. Creating it requires PHP GD with FreeType; if your host does not provide that support, the post still goes out with text and a link.
The social image can also supply the page’s Open Graph image, metadata websites use to choose an image when someone shares a link. PressQueue can set this image for every post, only posts without their own image, or none. If a supported SEO plugin has an image set for the post, PressQueue uses that image instead.
Review and manage sharing
Use the Share this post switch or Customize for this post in the WordPress editor to control an individual post. Share now sends a published post that has not been shared before, after showing what each channel will receive. Share old posts reshares previously published posts in batches, either through the Buffer queue, one at a time, or as Buffer drafts.
A Never share rule for a category, tag, or author takes priority over sharing rules. If WordPress triggers the same sharing event more than once, PressQueue does not create duplicate posts, and PressQueue does not automatically retry a share when Buffer’s reply is unclear. Check the share details before trying again.
PressQueue also supports X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and Facebook through Buffer.
