What is evergreen content, and how do you keep sharing it?

Updated · 5 min read

PressQueue is a free WordPress plugin that shares your posts through Buffer. See how it works

If you publish articles, guides, or tutorials, evergreen content is material that stays useful beyond a news cycle, trend, or specific date. A guide to choosing a reliable password manager, for example, can remain helpful for years, although its recommendations and screenshots will need updates.

To keep evergreen content useful, update the information and share it again through social posts and other formats. For WordPress publishers, PressQueue sends posts to social networks through Buffer. It can share new or updated posts and selected older posts. You set the message and image, then choose when to share.

What makes content evergreen?

Evergreen content answers a question that readers continue to have. How-to articles and practical guides often fit, as do best-of lists and reference pages. News, event coverage, and reports built around temporary figures tend to lose relevance sooner.

A Backlinko study of 3.6 billion articles found that how-to and list posts became evergreen more often than other formats in its dataset. The study measured shares and links received after an article’s first 30 days, so it misses other kinds of lasting value, such as continued search traffic. The findings describe the articles in the study; they do not predict how a specific article will perform.

A topic can stay relevant while an individual article becomes outdated. A tutorial about a software feature, for instance, may need new steps after the interface changes. A subject can have lasting value while its page still needs maintenance.

Keep the information current

Review evergreen pages for details that have changed. Replace outdated instructions and screenshots, check links, and verify statistics, product names, and cited sources. If an update changes the advice, revise the page before promoting it again.

A regular review schedule helps you catch outdated details. Some publishers review popular pages quarterly, as suggested by contributors to Forbes Communications Council. The right interval depends on the subject: software instructions need attention when the product changes, while a basic cooking technique may need less frequent review.

When possible, avoid titles and wording that expire quickly, such as “Best tools in 2025,” unless the page is intentionally an annual update. If the content does rely on current data, label and refresh it rather than presenting old figures as current. Updating a page also gives you a clear reason to share it again.

Reshare with a reason

A reshare works best when it gives readers a new reason to visit the same resource. Highlight a different tip, answer a common question, or explain what changed in the updated version. Adjust the wording for each network and make sure the post still matches the page.

Research has not established one best interval for resharing evergreen posts. Choose a pace that fits how often your audience sees your posts, and avoid sending the same message repeatedly. Check the link and the article before each promotion. If the topic or advice no longer applies, update the page first or stop sharing it.

You can also adapt a strong article into another format, such as a short video or newsletter feature. A set of social posts is another option. Parse.ly describes repackaging and social reshares as ways publishers extend the reach of evergreen material. These formats help people find the same information in different ways.

Share WordPress posts with PressQueue

PressQueue is a free, open source WordPress plugin that shares your posts to social media through Buffer. To use it, you need a WordPress site that allows plugin uploads, with WordPress 6.8 or newer and PHP 8.1 or newer. You also need a Buffer account with your social accounts connected.

Download pressqueue.zip from the PressQueue download page, then choose Plugins > Add Plugin > Upload Plugin in WordPress. After installation, paste a personal Buffer API key from your Buffer settings. There is no Buffer login button; PressQueue stores the key encrypted.

PressQueue supports Buffer channels for LinkedIn, X, Bluesky, Mastodon, Threads and Facebook. PressQueue leaves new channels turned off. Create a sharing rule to set when PressQueue shares a post and which post types and categories qualify. The rule also sets which channels receive it, along with the message and image. A one-click option creates a rule to share every new post to all channels. New rules start switched off. Test one against recent posts before turning it on.

For messages, use placeholders such as {{ title }} or {{ excerpt }}. PressQueue adds the post link, supports different messages for different networks, and shows a preview with a character count. For timing, choose the end of the Buffer queue, the top of the queue ahead of posts already waiting, or immediate sharing. You can also save a Buffer draft or schedule one post for a date and time.

To reshare posts already published, use Share old posts. PressQueue sends them in batches, spread across the Buffer queue, one at a time, or as Buffer drafts. Backdated posts do not share automatically. You can also use the Share this post switch or Customize for this post in the WordPress editor to control an individual post.

PressQueue starts in test mode, which records what it would share without sending anything. Switch to Live when you are ready, or Paused to stop sharing. A Never share rule excludes a category, tag, or author and overrides sharing rules. Repeated WordPress events do not create duplicate posts, and PressQueue does not automatically retry when Buffer’s reply leaves the result unclear.

For post artwork, choose no image or use the featured image. You can also select an image in each post or use a PressQueue social image. A social image uses the post title over a background with the site name below it. Set its style under Settings > Social images; PressQueue creates the image when a post first needs one and redraws it when the title or style changes. It stays out of the Media Library. The feature needs PHP GD with FreeType. Without that support, posts go out with text and a link.

The social image can also serve as the link preview image when someone shares the post URL. Choose whether PressQueue applies it to every post, limits it to posts without their own image, or leaves it unused. An image set for a post in an SEO plugin takes precedence. PressQueue works with Yoast SEO and Rank Math, as well as The SEO Framework and Jetpack. It adds the preview tags itself when no SEO plugin is active.

See the PressQueue documentation for setup details.
