A "never share" rule keeps posts off social media. A post that matches is never shared, by any rule, to any channel. This also covers Share old posts and sharing a post again. If PressQueue cannot check a "never share" rule for a post, it stops that post to be safe.
Make one
On the Rules page, click Add "never share" rule.
- Give it a name, for example "Keep private posts off social media".
- Under "Which posts", add the conditions, for example Category is any of Internal. See Conditions.
- Click "Save and test". The test shows "Never shared because of this rule" for matching posts and "Not affected by this rule" for the rest.
- Click "Turn on this rule".
"Never share" rules always apply: when a post is published or updated, and when posts are picked in Share old posts. They apply to every channel. So the editor has no "When" choices and no "Where" choices for them.
Where you see them
- In the editor, the "Social sharing" panel says "Kept off social media by the 'never share' rule" with the rule's name.
- In Activity, under "Why posts were shared or skipped", the post shows "Never share".
- In Share old posts, the review shows the post as "Skipped".
- In the test of a sharing rule, matching posts show "Blocked by the 'never share' rule" with the rule's name.
Rule or switch
The "Share this post" switch is for one post, set by the writer in the editor. A "never share" rule is for a whole group of posts, and nobody can override it from the editor. Use the rule when a category, tag or author must never appear on social media. Use the switch for a single post. For sites where only some posts belong on social media, see Opt-in sharing.
